Corrosion considerations

Offshore wind turbines suffer an extreme set of circumstances resulting in high risk of corrosion.

Areas of considerations

There are four distinct areas of the wind turbine support structure which are vulnerable to corrosion:

  • Buried area
  • Submerged area
  • Splash zone
  • Atmospheric area

It is essential at long sight to install cathodic protection in the buried and submerged areas.

Recommended corrosion protection

  • Buried and submerged areas: Cathodic protection by impressed current or sacrificial anodes
  • Splash zone: Combination of coating and cathodic protection (impressed current or sacrificial anodes)
  • Atmospheric area: Coating or metallising
